Photos from four great short walks in the Lake District

27th April 2026
My dog and I have enjoyed four beautiful spring walks in the Lake District over the past week or so, exploring scenic footpaths around Cartmel and Coniston Water — each offering something a little different.

- A walk through carpets of bluebells in peaceful woodlands in the Rusland Valley.
- A more elevated walk on the slopes of Gummers How with sweeping views across the South Lakes over to the Coniston fells. A perfect reminder of just how varied and beautiful this part of the Lake District is.
- Our lakeside walk at Coniston Water was wonderful. The views across the lake were so beautiful, and the quiet bays offered some lovely, serene moments. You can see our Coniston Water cottages here
- Our 4th walk was in and around Cartmel village. We enjoyed wandering through the winding lanes, past the historic Priory and across Cartmel Racecourse. The village was full of spring colour, with cottage gardens in bloom and a lovely, peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect spring day to see the fresh blossoms and green meadows, and the surrounding fells. You can see our Cartmel cottages here
- The 5th walk was up Hampsfell near Cartmel. The 360 degree views from Hampsfell span the Cartmel Valley, the Southern Lake District fells, out across Morecambe Bay and over to Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s a great, short walk that you can extend if you want a longer walk.
I hope you enjoy my photos of spring walks in the Lake District. Click on any image to open a ‘slide show’.
