Coniston Water

Photo of Coniston Water at High Nibthwaite

Beautiful, peaceful and serene Coniston Water is the third largest lake in the Lake District. The lake is five miles long, half a mile wide and about 184 feet deep.

Coniston Water is an excellent lake for canoeing and kayaking due to its tranquillity and has a few islands dotted around to explore.

The lake is home to the National Trust’s wonderful Steam Gondola, a fully restored, luxurious Victorian passenger gondola that cruises the lake in opulent style.

Coniston Water also became infamous as the lake where Donald Campbell C.B.E. lost his life attempting to break his own world water speed record in 1967 in his amazing speed boat-Bluebird. It took 34 years to locate the wreckage and recover his body. The village of Coniston has a wealth of Donald Campbell memorabilia and you’ll see some amazing photos of him and Bluebird in most of the pubs that he frequented for several of the months he lived in Coniston whilst preparing for his world speed record attempts.

There was an excellent film about his time in Coniston called ‘Across the Lake’ with Sir Anthony Hopkins brilliantly playing the part of Donald Campbell.

Donald Campbell remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964).
