Escape the Crowds: Discover the Serenity of the Lake District in Slow Season!

Whilst summer in the Lake District (and our holiday cottages) is undeniably beautiful, there’s a unique, enchanting charm to a slow-season escape.

If you’re seeking a peaceful, restorative retreat, a stay between January and March reveals a side of the Lake District that most visitors never see.

Here’s why these quietest months offer the most memorable experiences:

A Landscape Transformed

Imagine waking up to crisp, clear mornings, where the fells might be dusted with frost or snow, and the lakes and tarns are calm and reflective. The low winter sun casts long shadows, painting the landscape in dramatic hues.

January, February, and March offer a raw, wild beauty that’s totally invigorating—perfect for bracing walks and capturing stunning, moody photographs of the Cumbrian fells.

Embrace True Tranquillity. Fewer Crowds, More Peace

This is perhaps the biggest draw of the low season. With fewer visitors, you’ll find the popular walks and fells quieter, the local villages more peaceful, and the pubs and cafes even more welcoming. Enjoy the unhurried pace, connect with our local community, and feel like you have the stunning scenery almost to yourself. It’s the ideal time for genuine relaxation and escaping the hustle and bustle.

Cosy Cottage Comforts

In the quiet of slow season, our cottages become true cosy sanctuaries, perfect for slow mornings and fireside evenings. There’s nothing quite like returning to a warm, inviting home-away-from-home after a refreshing walk in the unspoilt, unhurried tranquillity and winter beauty of the Lake District.

Great Value – Make Your Break Go Further

Slow season is low season. This means lower prices during the quieter months, offering you the opportunity to experience luxury and tranquillity on a more modest budget. Lower prices during these quieter months mean you can enjoy the same high-quality stay for less, or perhaps even stay for longer.

Alternatively, use your low-season savings to upgrade your experience. It is the perfect excuse to indulge in the incredible Cumbrian food scene—from sampling artisanal local produce to enjoying an unforgettable meal at one of Cumbria’s world-class, award-winning restaurants or gastro pubs.

Winter Access

Coniston Fells in winter
The A5084 in the Coniston Valley, February 2025

You’ll be pleased to know that winter in the Cartmel Valley and the south  Coniston Water area is as accessible as it is beautiful.

Even when the higher mountains are covered in snow, our cottages sit at a lower elevation near sea level where conditions stay much milder. This makes snow disruption a rarity. We pride ourselves on our record of never having a guest miss a stay due to adverse weather. Book, travel and stay with total peace of mind.
