Train Journey Along the Cumbrian Coast

The Duddon Estuary

Start your journey at the Edwardian seaside town of Grange-over-Sands or either of the picturesque villages of Arnside or Cark-in-Cartmel and travel along the spectacular Cumbrian coast with the sea on 1 side and the Lake District mountains and fells on the other side of the train.

You’ll see far more from the train than you can see by road as the train goes over several stunning estuaries and hugs the coast all the way up the west coast of Cumbria to Carlisle. The last part of the journey has the Lake District mountains on 1 side of the train and looking across the Cumbrian coast to the Scottish mountains of Galloway on the other side.

For your return journey either travel back along the Cumbrian coast and sit on the other side of the train so you can see the scenary you missed earlier, or if you get your timetables out (or use the National Rail Website) you can travel from Carlisle down the amazing Settle to Carlisle railway to Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales. Change trains here after your journey through the gorgeous Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales and then experience more of the Western Yorkshire Dales as you travel to Carnforth where you finally change once more for 1 or 2 stops back to where you started from-unless of course you decide to start your epic journey from Carnforth.

An incredible train journey brought to you by the friendly people at Holiday Cottages Cumbria.com
