SIMON’S FOOD AND DRINK GUIDE
The only 2 Michelin star in North West England.
5 AA rosettes. L’Enclume is genuinely one of the best restaurants in the world and owner/chef Simon Rogan is rated as 1 of the world’s best chef’s.
A lot of the food comes from their own organic farm 1 mile away.
L’Enclume say-“Menus reflect the heart of Simon’s ‘farm to table’ philosophy. The best seasonal and local ingredients, handled with passion and creativity. Organic vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers grown on our very own 12-acre farm take centre stage, along with the finest produce from the surrounding Cumbrian countryside. As we only use the freshest seasonal ingredients, menus are subject to change.”
Please note-L’Enclume is not for everyone. You need to be open-minded about modern food and be prepared to try new exciting, inventive cuisine. If not, you might not like it. One of our guests complained, “I left was craving some good old fashioned stodge”. We love L’Enclume but you can’t please everyone!
If you want to book for a Friday and Saturday night you usually have to book several weeks or months ahead, literally! Booking for the rest of the week and lunchtimes is usually easier. The 7 course lunch menu is a very popular choice.

ROGAN & COMPANY, CARTMEL
Cartmel’s 2nd Michelin starred restaurant and probably the UK’s most affordable Michelin starred restaurant.
Owned and run by Simon Rogan (L’Enclume), Rogan & Co. has now become one of Cumbria’s best restaurants. Quality local seasonal ingredients, many of which are sourced from the Cartmel valley and from their own organic farm located less than a mile away. What might sound simple on the menu often ends up with a few pleasant, subtle additions on the plate. Lunch-12 to 2pm with set price low cost menus. Dinner-6.30 to 9.15pm. Prices from £26 for 2 courses or from £35 for 3 courses. Also open for lunch on Sunday for very good Sunday roast dinners.
Please note-just like L’Enclume, this is modern, innovative food with smaller portions. If you like a big plate piled high with meat, potatoes & veg-this restaurant won’t be to your liking. Booking is essential for lunch & dinner. Check website for opening hours and to book online:- https://www.roganandco.co.uk/ or Tel:- 015395 535917

FLOUNDERS FISH & CHIPS- Flookburgh-We think this is the best fish and chip shop in the area. Fresh fish, cooked to order.
SUPERMARKETS-Booths in Ulverston. As you enter on the A590. For those who don’t have Booths where you live-it’s like Waitrose, but better. Lots of local produce, great deli, cheese counter and cooked meat counter plus all the normal supermarket stuff too. If you prefer run of the mill supermarkets, Morrisons and Asda are in Kendal.
PETROL STATIONS-the nearest petrol stations are on the A590 just east of Newby Bridge or on the dual carriageway on the A590 heading towards the M6. The one in Grange has closed. Petrol stations are not always up to date on Sat navs.
BREAKFAST-Why not have breakfast at one of the wonderful local café’s, including some of the great ones in Grange-a good time saving idea on departure day too!
Best local breweries-Cartmel, Bowness Bay, Hawkshead, Coniston, Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery, Ulverston, Cumbrian Legendary Ales (Dickie Doodle), Ennerdale Brewery, Eden Brewery. There’s so many new microbreweries opening all the time, it’s hard to keep up, but fun trying!
THE CAVENDISH ARMS, CARTMEL-Most people’s choice as the best pub food in Cartmel. Dog & child friendly. Tables at front and at the rear by the stream.

THE PRIORY HOTEL-CARTMEL Square-Nice bar with tables outside on the square in warmer months. Serves the very popular Loweswater Gold. All their wines supplied from Cartmel Drinkshop, therefore they’re very good!
PIG & WHISTLE, CARTMEL-You’ll probably have driven past ‘The Pig’ on the edge of Cartmel. Relatively new owners serving good pub/bistro food & tapas at the bar. The ‘Pig’ and the Cavendish are usually the best 2 pubs in Cartmel for food.
Lovely, peaceful beer garden at the back with great views across the fields towards Cartmel Priory. Dog & child friendly www.thepigandwhistlecartmel.co.uk/ Booking for food is advisable as the pub is small but has 2 other dining rooms – 015395 36482
CARTMEL DRINKSHOP & WINE SNUG – Opposite Cartmel Cheese shop. Still owned by David Unsworth but more focus on great wines and spirits with the addition of a cosy wine. Tables & chairs on the terrace (heated in colder month). Usually a choice of 8 wines by the glass plus a good selection of gin, vodka, whisky and malt. They also offer a ‘cheese board’ from Cartmel Cheese shop to go with your wine. Open 11am to 6pm and 9pm on Friday’s and Saturday’s.
PARKING IN CARTMEL
We always manage to find a free parking space. All parking spaces in the village are free if you can find one but there is now a limit to how long you can park during the day.
Alternatively, you can pay to park at the racecourse car park-drive down the left of Cartmel ‘Village Shop’.
Or walk to Cartmel through the fields-map and directions are in the cottage ‘welcome’ folder on the dog info sheet.

CARTMEL CHEESE SHOP – Next to Cartmel Wine Shop. One of the best cheese shops in the UK! Stored at the perfect temperature & humidity. THE FAMOUS MORECAMBE BAY BROWN SHRIMPS-a world class delicacy. There are only 3 local shrimping families left in Flookburgh. They sell their seasonal catch from their homes and this might include plaice and other flat fish too. My favourite, the McClure family also sell potted shrimps.
